Get Well Soon (2017) Jennifer
Wright
The subtitle is: History’s
Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them. This is one of my favorite non-fiction
books. Jennifer Wright not only reviews
the major diseases of history, their biologic basis, symptoms and the
treatments but also goes into the politics and villains. In her review of tuberculosis she delves into
the inaccurate portrayals of the victims in literature. Throughout she has a delightful sense of
humor. For instance, she recommends insulting people by calling them ‘Walter
Freeman” the monster who popularized
lobotomies. A perfectly delightful book, full of a lot of great, gruesome details.
